Things to do in Central East Austin, Austin
Central East Austin is an established Austin neighborhood dating back to the mid-Nineteenth Century. Historically this area was a central part of the city’s African-American community. Many seniors and retirees have lived in their homes here for decades, but there has been an influx of newcomers including single young professionals, families, artists, and students attracted by the neighborhood’s convenient location and inexpensive housing. Some of the rundown houses are being replaced by new construction, including new condos and housing developments.
Although there is relatively little in the way of upscale shopping or dining here, new businesses are opening regularly, and nearby neighborhoods, including Downtown and the University of Texas, have abundant dining and shopping options. There are some well-known local establishments such as the Victory Grill and East Side Pies.
Residents span a wide range of ages, demographics, and ethnic groups. Some sections of the neighborhood can appear foreboding at night because of the poor street lighting and rundown homes, but the neighborhood is relatively safe.
Some highlights of the neighborhood are Chestnut Park, which has a picnic area, BBQ pits, playground, and splash pad, and Bennu Coffee, one of the few 24-hour coffee shops in town and a popular place for students to get online. There is also 1800s-vintage Oakwood Cemetery in which are buried some notable Texans, including several Texas governors, founding families of Austin, and the sole survivor of the Alamo. There are also the French Litigation Museum and the Austin Film Festival which both have low-cost film screenings. Central East Austin is also home to over a dozen different nonprofit organizations. There are also quite a few daycare centers and churches. Just to the east are Rosewood Park and Recreation Center, and Boggy Creek Greenbelt.
